Mixed content: http files on an https page

Images, scripts, stylesheets, frames and media that an https page asks the browser to load over plain http. Browsers block or quietly upgrade such files, so parts of the page can break, and the page can lose its padlock.

WarningCRAWL-011 · Crawlability · checked on every page

Where it usually comes from

Absolute http:// addresses saved in the content or the theme before the move to https, or an old CDN or embed address.

How to fix it

  • Change the addresses to https://, or to paths relative to the site.
  • Search the database for http:// links to your own domain and replace them.
  • If a file is not available over https, host it yourself.

How to check it yourself

Open the page, then the browser's developer console: mixed content shows there as warnings or blocked requests.

What it looks like in a report

Warning 3 files on this https page load over plain http. · evidence: http://cdn.example.com/hero.jpg

The images were inserted with absolute http:// addresses before the site moved to https. (An example shop; the numbers are illustrative.)

How the audit counts it

CRAWL-011 is a warning in the crawlability category, and weighs moderately in that category’s score. When it appears on many pages built from the same template, the report shows it once, with the number of pages it covers — because one change in the template fixes all of them.

If the finding is deliberate on your site, it can be accepted as intentional in the report. It then leaves the list and the score, and comes back on its own if what it shows changes.
