Internal links written to another address of the site

Internal links written to another address of the site — the other host, or http instead of https. Each such link is at best a redirect hop, at worst a link to a second copy of the page. It usually comes from absolute links typed into menus or content before a migration.

WarningLINK-006 · Links · checked once for the whole site

Where it usually comes from

Absolute links typed into menus, footers and articles before a move from http to https, or from www to the bare domain.

How to fix it

  • The links in the template are written to another address of the site. Change the base address they are built from to https://www.example.com.
  • In most CMSs it is one setting — "site URL", "base URL", APP_URL — not the links one by one.
  • After the change, every internal link should start with https://www.example.com/ or with a plain /.

Shown for an example shop at www.example.com. In a Trakis report the same fix comes with your own addresses and the list of your pages it applies to.

How to check it yourself

Hover the menu links and read the address: it should use exactly the host and scheme the site is served on.

What it looks like in a report

Warning 240 internal links point to http://www.example.com while the site is served at https://www.example.com.

Absolute links typed before the move to https; a search-and-replace in the menu and the content fixes them. (An example shop; the numbers are illustrative.)

How the audit counts it

LINK-006 is a warning in the links category, and weighs moderately in that category’s score. It is a fact about the site as a whole, so it is reported once, not once per page.

If the finding is deliberate on your site, it can be accepted as intentional in the report. It then leaves the list and the score, and comes back on its own if what it shows changes.

A Trakis audit runs this check and the other 65 on your site, and tells you on how many pages each one sits. Or go back to all the rules.
