Layout shifts while loading (CLS)

Cumulative Layout Shift from PageSpeed, page by page: above 0.1 is flagged, above 0.25 is what Google calls poor. Things that move while the page loads make people click the wrong thing; CLS is one of Google’s three Core Web Vitals.

WarningPERF-005 · Performance · checked on every page

Where it usually comes from

Images and embeds without dimensions, banners and cookie bars inserted above the content, and web fonts that swap late.

This check needs speed measured by Google PageSpeed. It runs only when that measurement is part of the audit; without it, the audit leaves it out rather than guess.

How to fix it

  • Give images, videos and embeds a width and height, or an aspect-ratio.
  • Reserve the space for banners and late widgets instead of inserting them above the content.
  • Load fonts with font-display: optional or preload them.

How to check it yourself

Run the page through PageSpeed Insights and read Cumulative Layout Shift in the field data.

What it looks like in a report

Warning CLS measured: 0.24, above the 0.1 threshold. · /product/*

The product image has no dimensions and the reviews widget loads late, pushing the price down. (An example shop; the numbers are illustrative.)

How the audit counts it

PERF-005 is a warning in the performance category, and weighs moderately in that category’s score. When it appears on many pages built from the same template, the report shows it once, with the number of pages it covers — because one change in the template fixes all of them.

If the finding is deliberate on your site, it can be accepted as intentional in the report. It then leaves the list and the score, and comes back on its own if what it shows changes.
