Images heavier than 200 KB

A sample of the site’s images, weighed without downloading them: those above 200 KB, and the pages that show them. Images are most of a page’s weight; a heavy one slows the first view on a phone more than anything in the HTML.

WarningPERF-007 · Performance · checked on every page

Where it usually comes from

Photos uploaded at camera size, no resizing in the theme, and JPEG or PNG where WebP or AVIF would do.

How to fix it

  • Resize images to the largest size they are shown at.
  • Save them as WebP or AVIF, and serve them with srcset so phones get the small ones.
  • Compress the rest; most photos look the same at a third of the weight.

How to check it yourself

Open the developer tools, Network tab, filter on images and sort by size.

What it looks like in a report

Warning 3 images weigh more than 200 KB; the heaviest is 1.4 MB (hero.jpg). · /

The home page hero was uploaded straight from the camera; resized and saved as WebP it would be about 150 KB. (An example shop; the numbers are illustrative.)

How the audit counts it

PERF-007 is a warning in the performance category, and weighs moderately in that category’s score. When it appears on many pages built from the same template, the report shows it once, with the number of pages it covers — because one change in the template fixes all of them.

If the finding is deliberate on your site, it can be accepted as intentional in the report. It then leaves the list and the score, and comes back on its own if what it shows changes.
