Title too long

Titles longer than 70 characters. Google cuts titles by width, not by count: about 60 characters usually fit, and past 70 the end is almost always gone — often the brand or the detail that matters.

Where it usually comes from

Titles built automatically from the product name, the category and the shop name together, or keyword lists written in the hope of ranking for all of them.

How to fix it

  • Write a <title> of 30–70 characters for each page: what the page is, then the site's name. The first 60 are the ones shown almost everywhere.
  • No two pages should share one. Set it in the template from the page's own name, so new pages get one too.

<title>{{ page.name }} | Example Shop</title>

Shown for an example shop at www.example.com. In a Trakis report the same fix comes with your own addresses and the list of your pages it applies to.

How to check it yourself

Search for the page on Google and look at its title in the results: if it ends in an ellipsis, it is cut.

What it looks like in a report

Warning The title is 74 characters and will be cut off in the results. · /product/* · 60 pages

The template joins product name, category and shop name; dropping one of them fits most titles. (An example shop; the numbers are illustrative.)

How the audit counts it

ONPAGE-002 is a warning in the on-page category, and weighs lightly in that category’s score. When it appears on many pages built from the same template, the report shows it once, with the number of pages it covers — because one change in the template fixes all of them.

If the finding is deliberate on your site, it can be accepted as intentional in the report. It then leaves the list and the score, and comes back on its own if what it shows changes.

A Trakis audit runs this check and the other 65 on your site, and tells you on how many pages each one sits. Or go back to all the rules.
